Потенциальный конкурент
Фирма, которая стремится и имеет возможность проникнуть на рынок при благоприятных условиях. Согласно теории рынка, возможное вступление в отрасль становится реальным при двух условиях: а) действующие на рынке фирмы получают сверхприбыль; б) новые фирмы способны преодолеть существующие барьеры. Проникновение на рынок новых производителей играет важную регулирующую роль: оно лишает действующие на рынке фирмы возможности получать сверхприбыль и способствует увеличению рыночного предложения (см. Perfect competition). Однако одна только угроза того, что на рынке появится конкурент, способна заставить действующие на рынке фирмы добиваться эффективности производства и устанавливать цены, соответствующие издержкам производства. Потенциальными конкурентами могут быть недавно созданные компании, компании-поставщики ресурсов или потребители продукции отрасли (вертикальное вступление), а также компании, которые действуют на других рынках и пытаются расширить свою деятельность в новом направлении (диверсифицированное вступление).
